Ancient and medieval historiography immediately recognized the extraordinary historical significance of the Battle of the Frigid River, 394, in the Vipava Valley, western Slovenia, which was instrumental in consolidating Christianity in the Roman West. In 1994, a scientific symposium was organized in the Zemono manor, in the Municipality of Vipava, in the Upper Vipava Valley, on the 1600th anniversary of the battle, focusing on the development of Christianity in North-Eastern Italy and Western Illyricum. In 2009 and 2010, the Cultural Educational Society Theodosius, residing in the village of Vrhpolje in the Municipality of Vipava, organized two spectacular events, which re-enacted the famous battle. Furthermore, in 2024, the Municipality of Ajdovščina, the Central Vipava Valley, organized an international festival dedicated to late antique culture, focusing on the Battle of the Frigid River as its prime event. The activities implemented by the Theodosius Society and the Municipality of Ajdovščina confirm that the Vipava Valley in western Slovenia is capable of integrating its Roman heritage into its tourism of er which fosters more demanding forms of tourism that bring higher added value. At the same time, such actions raise the visibility and reputation of the Vipava Valley as a first-class tourist destination, with the Battle of the Frigid River as its central tourism product.
