Abstract:
This paper shows how less popular urban spaces can become part of creative industries offering unique tourist experience through art, food, and tours. Located in the south of London, Brixton was long avoided by tourists. This neighbourhood used to be notoriously unsafe due to high crime rates, gang activities and riots in the 1980s. However, Brixton has recently seen a surge in popularity as it offers a booming street art scene. In synergy with the street food available in Brixton Market and Pop Brixton, an event venue and independent restaurant project, the graffiti and murals become appealing to niche markets of visitors. Moreover, the paper will study how the interpretation of urban culture through guided walking tours could work in tandem for those tourists seeking authenticity and diversity in the hospitality offer as well. In addition, the paper will analyse possibilities for gentrification and commodification of this neighbourhood in London.
