Abstract:
Film tourism is a growing global phenomenon with many positive impacts for destinations. It stimulates jobs, new business opportunities and growth in demand for tourism services and experiences. Popular blockbusters and TV series contribute to the visibility and positive image of destinations and, as a result, to increased tourist arrivals. Films that portray certain countries in a negative light can also stimulate more interest among potential tourists, as shown by the highly controversial film about the fictional journalist Borat from Kazakhstan. The remarkable growth and popularity of streaming platforms has positioned the Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltic region as one of the key new hubs for international TV productions. Countries in these regions attract big-name film crews with favourable tax incentives and offer a diverse filming environment and competitive infrastructure. In particular, the Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have taken the lead as very popular film locations, with skilled staf and attractive tax incentives for international film productions. The growth in film productions is reflected in new jobs and business opportunities. The popularity of TV series filmed in the Baltic States has also brought the previously unknown phenomenon of film tourism to the Baltic region. This trend is expected to increase with the growth of international film productions in the region.
