Abstract:
The Šaleška Valley with the only coal mine still operating in Slovenia and the heritage of one of the once largest leather factories in Central Europe, offers unique themed tourist products and experiences. As gastronomic souvenirs play an important role for tourists and the destination’s identity, it made sense to propose themed sweet souvenirs. The paper presents the process of creating unique gastronomic souvenirs based on local industrial heritage. The souvenirs presented are based on local stories and the identity of the region, and are made in a unique way. Thus, each individual souvenir and all of them together form a meaningful whole of the gastronomic and tourist offer of the Šaleška valley. While we have used very modern technology in the production of the moulds, the culinary souvenirs are handmade from selected ingredients and offered in sustainable packaging. Given the primary target group of the sweet souvenirs – school groups and young families – the products also offer added value to the tourist destination, which is striving to become the most attractive and family-friendly destination in Slovenia, according to the current local tourism development strategy.
